Class Description:
Art II consists of the continuous study of the elements and principles (of art), relying on the knowledge gained in Art I. The students will work with more advanced techniques, processes, and materials. For example, sculpture, painting, drawing, graphic arts, photography and ceramics. Emphasis is placed on the use of original, expressive ideas of the student, as well as displaying an understanding of the values, meanings, and purpose of art. Students will recognize this not only in their own artwork, but also their peers, and historical and current (famous) art pieces. Students will use current literature and technologies to explore past and present art ideas and techniques. Students will be challenged to use planning, research, and problem solving through hands on experiences.
Students will also be required to complete an outside of class sketchbook assignment every 10 days.
Students will identify and discuss key factors for critiquing and evaluating works of art, and express his or her educated opinion; discussing the positive or negative uses of the elements, principles, tools, materials, technologies, etc. Students will maintain a working journal, both a hard copy, and online copy through the use of a blog. This will include class notes, sketches, finished artworks and artist statements; reflections on current and past projects. Students will demonstrate and explore the understanding of 2D and 3D artworks through the use of a variety of materials, tools, techniques, and independent/creative/original thinking.
Prerequisite: Art I with a C or better.
